Ōpuke Thermal Pools & Spa
Solar-powered thermal pools with a swim-up bar, kids' caves, and private spa suites.
Ōpuke is the kind of facility that surprises visitors who expect a modest provincial pool. Opened in November 2021 with a NZD $7.5 million government investment, it won the New Zealand Institute of Architects' National Award for Commercial Architecture in its first year — and after one visit, the award makes complete sense. The complex is anchored by a striking array of 500 solar thermal collectors that heat the water system, backed by air-source heat pumps. The result is a genuine world-class thermal experience, set against the Canterbury Plains with the Southern Alps forming the backdrop.
The water itself is drawn from the Rangitata Diversion Race and heated to different temperatures across the pools. Adults have their own zone — a thermal pool with a swim-up bar serving food and drinks, with a two-standard-drink limit per session to keep the atmosphere civilised. The Discovery Pool is the all-ages social hub, featuring water caves and a cold plunge pool. Private spa suites are bookable for couples or small groups. The on-site café serves meals well above pool-café standard — the lamb ribs in particular have developed a following.
Within its first year of operation, Ōpuke welcomed 100,000 visitors — a remarkable number for a town of Methven's size. It has transformed the shoulder-season appeal of Methven, giving visitors a compelling reason to come in autumn and spring as well as the traditional ski season. It also makes a ski week considerably more appealing: the combination of full days on Mt Hutt followed by an evening soak is hard to beat.
What to expect
Arrive early or book ahead — sessions can be capacity-limited, particularly on weekends and school holidays. On arrival you are issued with a wristband and provided with a robe and towel at no additional cost, which immediately sets the tone. Lockers are available for valuables and clothing.
The adults-only swim-up bar pool is the standout feature for most visitors. Seating is available both in and out of the water, food is ordered from attendants, and the setting — warm water, mountain views, drinks in hand — is genuinely special at sunset. The two-drink limit is enforced and appreciated by guests who want a relaxing rather than rowdy atmosphere.
Families with children will spend most of their time in the Discovery Pool, which has enough features to keep kids engaged for a full session. The water caves are particularly popular with younger children. The cold plunge adjacent to the Discovery Pool is a genuine cold plunge — not a cold shower — and is worth doing if you can work up the courage.
Best time to visit
Ōpuke is excellent year-round, but the sweet spot is winter evenings during ski season — soaking in warm water as steam rises against the mountain backdrop and stars appear overhead is a genuinely memorable experience. Summer evenings are also beautiful, when the heat of the Canterbury Plains day has faded and the light on the Southern Alps turns golden. Weekday mornings and early afternoons are the quietest periods.
Insider tips
- ✓Book online in advance, especially for weekends and school holidays — sessions do sell out and you cannot guarantee entry without a booking.
- ✓The private spa suites book out weeks ahead during peak ski season. If you want a couples' spa experience, book as soon as you confirm your Methven travel dates.
- ✓The robes and towels are included. There is no need to bring your own.
- ✓The café food is genuinely good — the lamb ribs and pan-fried fish are recommended by regular visitors. Arrive hungry.
- ✓If you're visiting in winter after a day of skiing, bring dry clothes to change into afterwards. The robes are warm but Methven nights in winter are cold.
