Discovery Jet
Jet boat the Rakaia Gorge — 360° spins, sheer canyon walls, and 80km/h on a braided river.
Jet boating was invented in New Zealand — specifically to navigate the shallow, braided rivers of the South Island that were inaccessible to conventional propeller-driven boats. The Rakaia River, with its wide shingle beds, narrow channels, and dramatic gorge section, is exactly the kind of river the jet boat was made for. Discovery Jet runs New Zealand's only jet boat operation through the Rakaia Gorge, offering a 35-minute experience that covers 15 kilometres of river in conditions that swing between exhilarating and genuinely spectacular.
The experience begins on the open braided channels of the upper Rakaia — flat, wide river with the Southern Alps forming the backdrop — before the boat threads into the gorge itself. Here the canyon walls close in, the water deepens and darkens, and the speed and precision of the operation become apparent. The boat skims centimetres from rock faces, executes 360° flat spins on the wide sections, and hammers through the narrow gorge at speeds that make the canyon walls blur. Passengers are given life jackets and a safety briefing before departure — no prior experience is needed.
Beyond the thrill factor, the Rakaia Gorge jet boat offers genuine access to a part of the river that is simply not reachable any other way. Ancient rock formations, nesting sites for native birds including the kārearea (New Zealand falcon), and the sheer scale of the canyon walls are best appreciated from the water. The operators have run these trips for decades and know the river intimately — their commentary adds real depth to what would otherwise be a pure adrenaline experience.
What to expect
Meet your driver and crew at the Discovery Jet base upstream of the Rakaia Gorge Bridge. Life jackets are fitted, a safety briefing delivered, and you are loaded into the jet boat with up to 12 other passengers. The first few minutes on the open braided river are a warm-up — the driver reads the channels, picks the lines, and builds speed.
The gorge entrance is the moment the experience changes register. Speed increases, the canyon walls appear, and the 360° spins begin without warning. Most passengers are caught off guard by the first one — laughter and screaming in equal measure is the standard response. The gorge section is approximately 5 kilometres and takes around 15 minutes at speed — it passes fast.
The return journey varies the route through different channels, giving a different perspective. Total trip time is 35–40 minutes on the water. You will get wet — spray from spins and the bow wave at speed is part of the experience. Wear clothes you don't mind getting damp, bring a change of top if you run cold.
Best time to visit
Discovery Jet operates year-round subject to river conditions. Summer (December–March) offers the best weather and the most reliable water levels. Winter trips during ski season are popular and the gorge landscape is particularly dramatic with snow on the surrounding peaks. Spring (September–November) can see high river flows from snowmelt that occasionally affect operations — always book ahead and check conditions.
Insider tips
- ✓Book in advance — particularly during school holidays and ski season, trips fill up several days ahead.
- ✓Leave your phone in a dry bag or in the car if you're not confident in waterproof cases — you will get wet.
- ✓Ask about the drop-off option if you want to combine the jet boat with the Rakaia Gorge Walkway — they can drop you at the walkway start point.
- ✓Children under 3 are not recommended for safety reasons. Kids aged 3–14 generally love it — it is one of the most popular family activities in the region.
- ✓The experience is weather and river-condition dependent. If your booking is cancelled due to river levels, a full refund or rebooking is provided.
