Plan Your Methven Trip
Everything you need to know to plan a trip to New Zealand's alpine village.
Getting to Methven
Methven is approximately 95km west of Christchurch, around 1 hour 15 minutes by car via State Highway 1 and then inland via the Inland Scenic Route 72.
From Christchurch International Airport, the easiest option is a rental car. During ski season (June–October), shuttle services like Methven Travel and Snowman Shuttles run daily transfers.
When to visit
Winter (Jun – Oct)
Ski and snowboard at Mt Hutt, soak in Ōpuke Thermal Pools, ice skate at Staveley, and enjoy the buzzing après-ski scene in town.
Summer (Nov – Apr)
Hike the Rakaia Gorge Walkway, jet boat the Rakaia River, balloon over the Canterbury Plains at sunrise, and explore the high country.
How long to stay
Weekend (2–3 days): Enough for Mt Hutt + Ōpuke + a gorge walk or jet boat trip.
Mid-week (4–5 days): Add ballooning, Lake Coleridge day trip, and explore the village.
Full week (6–7 days): Complete ski week, or a relaxed summer itinerary covering all the major attractions with rest days.
