Hot Air Ballooning over the Canterbury Plains
Sunrise above the Canterbury Plains — 300km panorama from the Pacific to the Southern Alps.
The Canterbury Plains at dawn from 1,000 metres altitude is one of New Zealand's great views, and it is essentially unavailable by any means other than a hot air balloon. The patchwork of irrigated farms, the braided silver threads of the Rakaia and Ashburton Rivers, the Pacific Ocean to the east, and the full panorama of the Southern Alps to the west — on a clear morning, the scale of what you are looking at is humbling. Adventure Balloons NZ has been operating from its Methven base for over 30 years, and their pilots know this landscape and its weather patterns intimately.
Flights depart at sunrise when conditions are optimal — calm, cool air creates the stable flying conditions that make ballooning both safe and beautiful. Passengers meet at the Methven departure point in the pre-dawn darkness, assist with inflating the balloon (an unexpectedly satisfying part of the experience), and lift off as the sun rises behind the Banks Peninsula to the east. The hour-long flight ends with a champagne-style breakfast at the landing site before a 4WD shuttle returns you to Methven.
Hot air ballooning is one of those activities that sounds relaxing but arrives as something more powerful. The silence at altitude — wind noise ceases once the balloon matches wind speed — is profound. The landscape spread below is Canterbury at its most elemental. The combination of these elements with the physical sensation of floating on nothing but heated air tends to produce a quiet, reflective experience rather than an adrenaline rush. It is very different from what most first-timers expect, and better.
What to expect
Meet your pilot and crew at the Methven meeting point in the early morning — exact time depends on sunrise and varies through the season. The crew invite passengers to help with the balloon inflation, which takes 20–30 minutes. Once inflated, passengers climb into the basket, and the balloon lifts off steadily — there is no sudden lurch or sensation of falling, just a gradual and surprisingly calm ascent.
The flight itself lasts approximately one hour. The pilot controls altitude by adjusting the burner; the direction is governed entirely by wind and the pilot's knowledge of wind patterns at different altitudes. Landing sites are chosen on the fly and the landing is typically soft — a brief bounce or slide on the basket, then stillness. The breakfast is served at the landing site by the ground crew.
Passengers should dress warmly — temperatures at altitude are 5–8°C cooler than on the ground, and the pre-dawn start makes the departure feel cold. Layers are strongly recommended. Closed-toe shoes are required for basket boarding.
Best time to visit
Hot air ballooning at Methven operates year-round, but summer (December–March) offers the most reliable weather windows and the longest flights before thermals develop. Autumn mornings (March–May) are particularly beautiful with golden light on frost-covered paddocks. Winter flights during ski season are offered and the view of the snowcapped Alps from altitude is extraordinary — but cold weather gear is essential. Flights are cancelled in strong winds or rain, and the operators will rebook or refund if your flight is weather-cancelled.
Insider tips
- ✓Book as far in advance as possible. Flights have limited passenger numbers and popular dates — particularly weekends during ski season — book out well ahead.
- ✓Be prepared for early starts: flights depart at or before sunrise, which means meeting times of 5–6am in summer and later in winter.
- ✓Wear the warmest layers you own. Even in summer, altitude and the pre-dawn start make the experience cold. Gloves and a beanie are not excessive.
- ✓If your flight is cancelled due to weather, operators will rebook at no charge — this is a standard part of balloon operations. Stay flexible around your departure date if possible.
- ✓The champagne breakfast at the landing site is included. On a clear winter morning, sipping sparkling wine in a frosty Canterbury paddock watching the balloon deflate is a genuinely Methven experience.
