Terrace Downs — now operated as Fable Terrace Downs Resort — is a championship 18-hole, par 72 course set on the river terraces above the Rakaia Gorge, 25 minutes north of Methven. Designed by Canadian architect Sid Puddicombe and opened in 2001, it is regularly ranked among the South Island's better resort courses. The two nines have distinct characters: the front nine plays through parkland with a woodland feel, while the back nine opens out into links-style country with a distinctly Scottish flavour, tussock and all.
The setting is the point of difference. The course sits at the edge of the Canterbury high country with Mt Hutt and the Southern Alps filling the skyline and the turquoise Rakaia River in its canyon below. Four tee options on every hole mean the course scales honestly from casual resort golfers to low handicappers — off the back tees it is a genuine test, with a course rating of 130.
This is a full resort, so the golf comes with infrastructure: a clubhouse and pro shop, driving range, coaching from a PGA director of golf, Titleist club hire, carts and trundlers, plus a restaurant and luxury villa accommodation on site. Other operators run archery and clay shooting from the resort grounds, and green fee rates are discounted for Methven and Mid Canterbury locals — worth knowing if you are staying in the district a while.
What to expect
Book a tee time ahead through the golf shop — the course is open to visitors daily, and green fees are seasonal. Winter rates (roughly May to late September) run from NZD $85 midweek for 18 holes; summer rates from NZD $99 midweek and $135 on weekends. Nine-hole rates are available, and Monday specials bring 18 holes down to $70–75. Resort guests and locals from Methven, Ashburton and surrounding districts pay reduced rates.
The course measures around 6,400 metres from the back tees, and wind is a factor most afternoons — this is high country golf, and the exposed back nine plays very differently in a nor'west blow than on a still morning. Carts hire for $60, Titleist clubs for $40 (9 holes) or $65 (18), and trundlers for $10–15. The driving range is open for practice or a casual family session.
Allow time either side of your round. The clubhouse serves drinks and food with views over the course and mountains, and the drive itself — across the Rakaia Gorge bridge and up onto the terraces — is one of the better short drives in the district. One-hour lessons with the director of golf cost NZD $140 for visitors, with playing lessons available that include the green fee.
Best time to visit
The course is open year-round, and each season has a case. Summer (October–April) gives the best playing conditions and long evenings, at the highest rates. Winter golf here is better than most — frosts burn off by mid-morning, rates drop to $85 midweek, and a clear winter day with snow on Mt Hutt is the course at its most photogenic. Mornings are more reliable than afternoons at any time of year, as the nor'wester tends to build through the day.
