Methven Heliski is the heli-skiing arm of Alpine Guides, the Aoraki/Mount Cook guiding company whose director Kevin Boekholt has held IFMGA certification since 1985. The operation covers more than 1,000 square kilometres of the Arrowsmith, Ragged and Palmer Ranges west of Methven — over 200 named runs, with landings up to 2,500 metres and descents averaging around 850 vertical metres. The longest, down the Reischek Glacier, runs three kilometres and drops 1,100 metres.
The standard product is the five-run "Perfect Day" at NZD $1,695 per person, with a guaranteed minimum of 3,000 vertical metres of skiing and extra runs available at $165 each. That price includes the guiding (never more than four guests per guide), all helicopter time and land access fees, avalanche transceivers, a picnic lunch in the snow, and transfers from Methven to the Glenfalloch Station helipad in the Rakaia Gorge. Private charters and discounted multi-day packages for week-long stays are also offered.
This is big, remote terrain skied in small groups, but it is not reserved for experts. Guests are grouped by ability and the guides choose terrain to match — strong intermediates who are comfortable on ungroomed snow are welcome, as are snowboarders and telemarkers. The 2026 season runs from 18 July to 20 September.
What to expect
Flying days start with check-in at 7:45am at the Main Street office or the helipad, followed by a safety and transceiver briefing. Helicopters lift off around 9:50am. From there the day is a rhythm of short flights and long descents — chutes, open faces, glaciated bowls — with the group regathering at each pickup. Lunch is a picnic on the snow around 1pm, and you are back in Methven by about 5pm.
The operation flies only in fine, stable weather, which in a Canterbury winter means roughly four to five flying days a week. If your day is weathered off, bookings carry over to the next flyable day — worth understanding before you build a tight itinerary around it. No deposit is required to book, which reflects how weather-dependent the exercise is.
Days run with a minimum of four guests, and groups are sorted by ability so nobody is held back or dragged beyond their level. Bring your own skis or board — wide powder skis are the right tool and can be rented in Methven — along with warm layers and sunglasses or goggles for both bright and flat light. Transceivers are issued and briefed; guides carry rescue gear and radios.
Best time to visit
The season runs mid-July to late September — 18 July to 20 September in 2026. August and early September usually offer the deepest, most reliable snowpack across the three ranges. Build at least one spare day into your Methven stay: the operation only flies in fine weather, and a carried-over booking is common. Late season brings longer days and settled spring snow.
