Nearby Attractions
Mt Hutt Ski Area
Mt Hutt is not just Methven's ski field — it is the reason Methven exists as a winter destination at all. Sitting at 2,086 metres above sea level with a vertical drop of 683 metres and 365 hectares of skiable terrain, it is the largest and most celebrated ski area in the South Island of New Zealand. The World Ski Awards have recognised it as New Zealand's Best Ski Resort for ten consecutive years, and once you experience a bluebird day on the mountain — Pacific Ocean glittering to the east, the Southern Alps unfurling to the west — you will understand why the superlatives keep coming.
Ōpuke Thermal Pools & Spa
Ōpuke is the kind of facility that surprises visitors who expect a modest provincial pool. Opened in November 2021 with a NZD $7.5 million government investment, it won the New Zealand Institute of Architects' National Award for Commercial Architecture in its first year — and after one visit, the award makes complete sense. The complex is anchored by a striking array of 500 solar thermal collectors that heat the water system, backed by air-source heat pumps. The result is a genuine world-class thermal experience, set against the Canterbury Plains with the Southern Alps forming the backdrop.
Rakaia Gorge Walkway
The Rakaia Gorge Walkway is one of Canterbury's most rewarding half-day walks, and it is almost entirely unknown outside the region. Starting from Evans Reserve near the Rakaia Gorge Bridge on State Highway 77, the trail follows the southern bank of the Rakaia River through a landscape that shifts dramatically as you walk — from open farmland terraces to a narrow volcanic canyon of sculpted rock walls, before climbing through native bush to a ridgeline with panoramic views of the Canterbury Plains and Southern Alps.
Discovery Jet
Jet boating was invented in New Zealand — specifically to navigate the shallow, braided rivers of the South Island that were inaccessible to conventional propeller-driven boats. The Rakaia River, with its wide shingle beds, narrow channels, and dramatic gorge section, is exactly the kind of river the jet boat was made for. Discovery Jet runs New Zealand's only jet boat operation through the Rakaia Gorge, offering a 35-minute experience that covers 15 kilometres of river in conditions that swing between exhilarating and genuinely spectacular.
